What's Included, What Costs Extra, and a Checklist to Compare Quotes

Auto detailing includes a deep clean of your vehicle's interior and exterior, finished with a layer of protection. Inside, that means vacuuming, carpet and seat extraction, leather cleaning and conditioning, and cleaning every hard surface. Outside, it means a hand wash, wheel and tire cleaning, clay bar decontamination, and a sealant on the paint.

What a detail does not automatically include is where most of the confusion starts. Paint correction, multi-year ceramic coating, headlight restoration and odor treatments are usually priced as add-ons or as separate services. Below, we walk through what a full detail package at Tidy Car covers item by item, what typically costs extra, and a checklist you can use to compare any detailer's quote.

The Short Answer: What a Full Detail Package Covers

  • Interior: vacuuming of floors and trunk, carpet and cloth seat extraction, leather deep cleaning and conditioning, dash cleaning with UV protection, console, cup holders and vents, door panels, trim, door jambs and glass.
  • Exterior: foam cannon pre-wash, two-bucket hand wash, wheels and tires hand washed, bug and tar removal, clay bar treatment, and tire dressing.
  • Protection: a short-term sealant on the paint, plus protectant on trim and a coating on the wheels at many shops.
  • Time: a few hours for most vehicles. Tidy Car's full interior and exterior detail runs 2 to 4 hours.
  • Usually not included: paint correction, multi-year ceramic coating, headlight restoration, engine bay detailing and ozone odor treatment.

Here is the catch: "full detail" is not a standardized package. One shop's full detail is a thorough vacuum and a wash; another's includes extraction, clay and leather conditioning. The word "full" does not define a detail. The itemized list does. That is why two quotes for the same car can look nothing alike.

Interior Detailing: What Gets Cleaned Inside

A proper interior detail goes far beyond a quick vacuum. It works top to bottom so that dust knocked loose from the dash and vents lands on carpet that has not been cleaned yet.

The Surfaces You Sit On and Walk On

Floors, mats and the trunk get a full vacuum first. Cloth mats, carpet and cloth seats are then extracted, which means a cleaning solution is worked into the fibers and pulled back out along with the dirt, spills and salt residue a vacuum cannot reach. Leather is deep cleaned and then conditioned, because cleaning alone can leave it dry.

The Surfaces You Touch

The console, cup holders and air vents collect the most grime, so they get detailed by hand. The dashboard is cleaned and treated with a UV protectant to slow fading and cracking. Door panels are cleaned and conditioned, interior trim and plastics are wiped down, and door jambs, the area most car washes skip, are cleaned as well.

Glass, Headliner and Odors

Interior and exterior glass are cleaned streak-free as part of the package. A light headliner wipe may be included, but a full headliner cleaning and extraction is usually an add-on because the fabric and adhesive above your head need a gentler, slower process. Ozone treatment for smoke, pet or food odors is also typically extra. If you only want the cabin done, our interior detailing packages break these items out separately.

Exterior Detailing: What Happens to the Paint, Wheels and Trim

Interior and exterior detailing are often sold together, but the exterior side is where technique matters most, because a careless wash is one of the main causes of swirl marks.

  • Foam cannon pre-wash. Thick foam loosens dirt before anything touches the paint, so less grit gets dragged across it.
  • Two-bucket hand wash. One bucket holds soapy water, and the other rinses the wash mitt, which keeps dirt out of the soap.
  • Wheels and tires. Hand washed separately with dedicated tools, since brake dust is some of the harshest grime on the car.
  • Decontamination. Bugs, tar and road film are dissolved, and then a clay bar pulls out contaminants bonded to the paint.
  • Protection and dressing. A sealant goes on the paint, a protectant on the trim, a coating on the wheels, and dressing on the tires.

Decontamination is the step most people have never heard of, and it is the one that separates a detail from a wash. After a hand wash, paint can still feel rough to the touch. That roughness is contamination stuck to the clear coat, and any protection applied on top of it will not bond as well or look as glossy.

Included, Add-On, or a Different Service Altogether

The easiest way to read any detailing menu is to sort every item into one of three buckets.

  • Included in a full detail: the cleaning and light protection steps above, inside and out.
  • Add-ons: headlight restoration, engine bay detailing, headliner extraction, ozone treatment, cabin air filter replacement and minor spot polishing. These solve a specific problem and are priced on their own.
  • Separate services: paint correction, ceramic coating, paint protection film and window tint. Each is its own job with its own prep, time and price.

The line between buckets two and three matters most for your paint. A detail cleans and protects the finish you have. It does not remove swirl marks, water spots or light scratches in the clear coat. That takes machine polishing, which is what paint correction is, and it usually takes hours to days rather than being folded into a detail.

"Ceramic" in a Detail Package Is Not a Ceramic Coating

Many detail packages now mention ceramic. At Tidy Car, the full detail includes an entry-level ceramic sealant and a trim-safe ceramic protectant. These add gloss, water beading and some protection, and they are a real step up from a basic wax. But their protection is measured in months, not years.

A professional ceramic coating is a different service. The paint is washed, decontaminated and often corrected first, then the coating is applied panel by panel and given time to cure. At Tidy Car, coating packages take anywhere from one day to three to five days, depending on how much of the vehicle is coated. If a quote calls a two-hour detail a ceramic coating, ask exactly which product is going on and how long it is expected to last.

Your Auto Detailing Checklist: What to Ask Before You Book

Use these questions to compare detailing services included in any quote, not just ours.

  • Is the car washed by hand, and do you use a two-bucket method?
  • Is clay bar decontamination included, or is it an extra?
  • Are carpets and cloth seats extracted, or only vacuumed?
  • Is leather cleaned and conditioned?
  • What protection goes on the paint, and how long should it last?
  • Which items on your menu are add-ons, and what do they cost?
  • Is the price a starting price, and what raises it (vehicle size, pet hair, heavy staining)?
  • How long will you need the vehicle?
  • Is anyone on the team trained or certified through a group like the International Detailing Association?

A shop that answers these clearly, in writing, is usually one that does the work the same way every time.

A few answers deserve a second look. A price with no list of what is included makes comparison impossible. A detail promised in under an hour on a heavily used vehicle leaves little time for extraction or decontamination. And a "ceramic coating" bundled into a standard wash is almost always a spray sealant with a bigger name. None of these mean the shop is dishonest, but each one is worth a follow-up question before you hand over the keys.

Why Wisconsin Winters Change What a Detail Should Focus On

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation uses an average of 452,000 tons of salt per season on state highways, before counting city and county roads. Some of that ends up on your car. It dries as a white crust on carpets and mats, packs into door jambs, and coats lower panels, wheels and the back of the vehicle.

That makes timing part of what a detail includes. For most Sheboygan drivers, a sensible rhythm is two full details a year: one in spring to extract salt from the carpets and decontaminate the paint, and one in fall to put fresh protection on before the roads turn white. Families, pet owners and high-mileage drivers may want more. One thing no detail covers is the underbody. Rustproofing and undercoating are separate services built for that job.

When a Full Detail Is More Than You Need

Honest work sometimes means recommending less. A full detail is not the right fit if:

  • Only the cabin needs attention. An interior refresh, which takes 1 to 2 hours at Tidy Car, covers the vacuum, wipe-down, and glass.
  • Only the outside is dirty. A full-service hand wash or exterior detail handles the wash, decontamination and sealant.
  • The paint is swirled or dull. No amount of washing fixes defects in the clear coat. That is a paint correction job.
  • You want protection for years, not months. A ceramic coating, applied after proper prep, is built for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full car detail take?

Most full interior and exterior details take a few hours. At Tidy Car, the full package runs 2 to 4 hours. Larger vehicles and heavily soiled interiors take longer.

Does a car detail include cleaning the engine?

Usually not. Engine bay detailing is a common add-on because it needs different products and care around electrical components. Ask for it when you book if you want it done.

What is the difference between a car wash and a detail?

A wash removes loose surface dirt from the outside. A detail cleans the interior and exterior in depth, removes bonded contamination with a clay bar, and finishes with protection on the paint, trim and interior surfaces.

How often should you get your car detailed?

There is no single industry rule. In Wisconsin, twice a year is a practical baseline: once after salt season and once before it. Add more if you carry kids, pets or a lot of passengers.
